First Grade Curriculum
We are using the EngageNY curriculum to guide our literacy and math instruction. The English Language Arts portion (ELA) incorporates science and social studies into our reading instruction and discussions.
Reading: Students will learn how to blend sounds together to decode and read words. We will learn strategies to help us read words and sentences, and introduce sight words or "heart" words that students should know how to read by heart. The goal is for students to read accurately, with fluency and expression, and retell a story. We use the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) to assess students at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Students are expected to be reading at a DRA level 14 in May.
Writing: We start by working on how to write letters, and move into words and what makes a sentence. Students should be able to learn how to write 3 or more sentences describing an event. We will explore narratives, fiction, non-fiction, and opinion writing. We focus on capital letters, finger spaces, punctuation, and grammar.
Daily 4: In order to meet our students' needs, we will use a workshop model in Language Arts. This also teaches students how to develop responsibility for completing their activities independently. Students rotate between phonemic awareness activities and reading, in addition to meeting with the teacher in a a small group to work on reading fluency and comprehension skills. We call this "Daily 4." Ask your child about what they enjoy doing!
Math: We use a curriculum that builds students concept of number sense. First, we review numbers to 20 and what comes before and after. Students will also learn addition and subtraction, measurement, data and probability, and geometry. We are also using a guided math workshop model to target certain skills with groups of students.
The EngageNY ELA and Math curriculum build on skills students learned in kindergarten. Please click the pdf file at the bottom of the page to access information regarding mathematics.
In addition, ASM as a whole focuses on character education. There are six pillars that we will learn about, model, and demonstrate: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
